When I was two years old, my godfather built a dollhouse by hand for my birthday. (Pictured here in it's original color.) As a child, I loved this dollhouse. It was a refuge for my dollies, a hangout for my Barbies, and it gave me a certain "cool" factor with the neighborhood girls. As cool as I thought this dollhouse was, the inside remained empty and unfurnished. My dad had purchased all the accouterments to create a kick ass miniature environment. I am talking ALL the furniture and accessories for a kitchen, living room, bedrooms, study...you name it! It was always something we set out to create together, but never got around to.
The years passed and the dollhouse got more rickety. Eventually, I stopped playing with my mini mansion. Dad and I kept putting the dollhouse project on hold. There were cooler and less time consuming crafts to be done. It may have been out of sight but, the dollhouse was never out of mind. It moved with me everywhere(and trust me people....I have moved around ALOT...you don't need all the deets.)
Recently, Dad had a series of mini stroke symptoms that kept him in the hospital for several days. It left me concerned about his health, well-being and well you know...
I'm embarrassed to say that it lead me to thinking about how we had been loosing touch over the last few years. I struggled and was ashamed of this because I had become the cliche. How had I left myself get disconnected from my own father?
The dollhouse is pushing 26 years old--but who cares! We're fixing it up, building the rooms and having some quality Daddy daughter time while we do it.
And, I know what your thinking. And, yes this is a blog about cupcakes. But, this is also MY blog and this project is really important to me. I thought it would be fun to have a place to share the outcome.
First thing was first...old dolly needed a clean up and a face lift. So we primed her...
And gave her a new coat...a beautiful Moonlight yellow...

There's a lot of cracks to fill and touch ups to be done before we can start the inside. So stop back around every once and a while to see our progress. It's going to be fun! And trust me--you won't be disappointed with the outcome.
Oh, and BTW...I'll keep the cupcakes coming! ;-)
Until my next cupdate,
LN

I like the yellow color. Are you going to paint the roof too?
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm planning a red door. I think the roof will get a wood stain.
ReplyDeleteI just found an old doll house on Freecycle yesterday, and plan to spend time fixing it up for my daughter over the next few years. I'm excited to look at your doll house posts!
